Through a postcolonial lens, it is quite easy to make connections in Things Fall Apart because the postcolonial theories lie at the base of the novel itself. Postcolonial studies look at the colonized civilizations that are what to be considered “taken” over by the white Americans of Europeans. “Postcolonial studies excludes literature that represents either British or American viewpoints and concentrates on writings from colonized or formerly colonized cultures . . .that were once dominated by, but remained outside of the white male” As states before, theories on postcolonialism take into account the viewpoint of the civilization that is being dominated by superior technology, manpower, or even what has been said to be divine right to the world. Things Fall Apart specifically takes into account a certain African tribe as white colonizers try and show the Africans the “right” way. A lot of the times, the European settlers revert to violence to force the “uncivilized” society to follow their ways because “if you ain't white, you ain't right” (Disclaimer: This is not what I think, it is only a small joke)
Anyways, the white people use force to create the physical motivation to follow the white beliefs. What do they say is their right in changing the African way of life? Simple… Religion. Religion can be a great propaganda tool to convince people that you are right. What better way is there to prove that you are right than to say God said so. That along with the violent motivation would be enough to sway any culture’s traditions or beliefs.
So my essay will kinda be about some of the things stated above. I know that all these essays will probably sound the same in the beginning, but I plan on developing some more original thoughts that do not come exactly from the articles. I just need to start writing, like many of the people, and then I will develop more thoughts, ideas, and theories.
